Last year, lightning cost Florida homeowners more than it cost homeowners in any other state. Florida homeowners filed 5,167 lightning damage claims in 2025 — more than any other state — and nationally the average lightning claim jumped almost 43% in a single year, to $26,616. Vaisala Xweather’s annual lightning report counted 252 million lightning events across the U.S. in 2025 — an eight-year high, up 20% over 2024. Florida recorded the highest lightning density of any state, at 305 events per square mile. Much of the state sees 80 or more days a year with thunder and lightning. In the Big Bend, you can practically set your watch by the storms rolling in off the Gulf on a summer afternoon.

The insurance data tells the same story from the other direction. The Insurance Information Institute reports that U.S. insurers paid $1.65 billion in lightning-related homeowners claims in 2025 — a 59% jump over the year before — across nearly 62,000 claims. Florida led every state in claim volume.
Here’s the part worth sitting with: the average claim has climbed 147% since 2017. Lightning didn’t get stronger. Our houses got fuller of things with circuit boards in them — variable-speed HVAC, smart appliances, well pump controllers, networking gear, EV chargers. Every one of those is a device a surge can kill, and a device a power strip was never protecting.
A note on rankings: lightning detection networks count differently. Vaisala Xweather measures lightning events and ranked Florida first by state density in 2025. AEM measures flashes and ranked Oklahoma first, with Florida second. Florida ranks top-two on every network. And on the metric that hits your wallet — insurance claims — it stays number one.
Two Very Different Products: How They Work Together
A surge-protective power strip and a whole-home surge protective device (SPD) are not competitors. They’re two layers of the same system, built to work at two different points on the path electricity takes through your house. A well-protected Tallahassee home has both, and neither one does the other’s job.
Not Every Power Strip Is a Surge Protector
This is the first thing to sort out, because plenty of Tallahassee homes have the wrong one. A plain power strip is a multi-outlet extension cord. It splits one receptacle into six and offers no surge protection at all. A surge-protective strip has clamping components inside and carries a UL 1449 safety listing for exactly that purpose. On the shelf, the tell is a joule rating on the packaging and a “protected” indicator light on the unit. No joule rating means no protection. What Each Layer Actually Covers
What a surge strip does well: the last few feet. It sits right at the device, which is the closest protection your electronics can get. It catches the small residual surges that make it past the panel, and it soaks up the spikes your own house generates every time a large motor cycles on and off — the AC compressor, the well pump, the pool pump. For a home office, an entertainment center, or networking gear, that point-of-use layer earns its keep. One thing to know: each surge uses up a little of its capacity. Plan on replacing them periodically. When that indicator light goes dark, the outlets still work but the strip has nothing left to give.
What it can’t do is reach what isn’t plugged in. That’s not a flaw — it’s the design. A strip protects what’s connected to it. Your HVAC system, water heater, well pump, hardwired ovens and microwaves, garage door opener, and EV charger connect straight to the panel, so no plug strip can reach them. Those also happen to be the most expensive things in the house. It’s why the most common surge-damage call we get in Tallahassee isn’t a television. It’s an HVAC compressor or a refrigerator control board.
Where the Whole-Home Layer Comes In
That gap is what the whole-home device fills. It lives at the panel, covers every circuit at once, and takes the large surges — from a nearby lightning strike, a utility fault, or the grid re-energizing after an outage — before they reach your branch circuits at all.

There’s also a code angle worth knowing. Since the 2020 National Electrical Code, Article 230.67 has required a Type 1 or Type 2 surge protective device at the service of every new dwelling unit, and again whenever service equipment changes out. The code caught up to what electricians in lightning country already knew. Florida still builds to the 2020 NEC through the current Florida Building Code, so that is the operative rule here. It only applies going forward, though. If your home predates the change and your panel has never been touched, the whole-home layer is almost certainly the one you’re missing.
So the honest answer is that you want both. Keep the surge strips on your sensitive electronics and add the layer at the panel that covers everything else.
How Whole-Home Surge Protection Actually Works
A whole-home surge protective device (SPD) installs at your electrical panel — the box where all your home’s power originates. From there, it protects every circuit in the house at once.
A surge can come from a nearby lightning strike, a utility switching event, or the grid re-energizing after an outage. The SPD detects the voltage spike and safely dissipates the excess energy to ground before it reaches your branch circuits. Your appliances and electronics only ever see the voltage they were designed for. It happens in nanoseconds, automatically, every time.
The best protection is layered — what the industry calls a two-tier approach:

- Tier 1 — at the panel. A service-entrance SPD takes the big hit. This is the workhorse that stops large, damaging surges from lightning events or utility faults.
- Tier 2 — at the point of use. Quality plug-in protectors on your most sensitive electronics catch small residual surges and anything generated inside the home by motors cycling on and off.
Tier 1 is the piece almost every older Tallahassee home is missing. It’s the difference between “my whole house is protected” and “the one TV I remembered to plug in is protected.”

Does whole-home surge protection stop lightning?
Not a direct strike to the home — only a dedicated lightning protection system does that, and direct strikes stay rare. What a whole-home SPD stops is the far more common threat: the surge that travels through the power lines from a nearby strike, a utility event, or grid switching. That’s what damages the overwhelming majority of appliances and electronics.
What’s the difference between a power strip and a surge protector?
They look almost identical on the shelf, and plenty of homes have the wrong one. A plain power strip is just a multi-outlet extension cord with an on/off switch — it adds outlets and nothing else. Is surge protection required by code in Florida?
NEC Article 230.67, introduced in the 2020 code, requires a Type 1 or Type 2 SPD on services supplying dwelling units — for new construction and when service equipment is replaced. Florida still builds to the 2020 NEC through the current Florida Building Code. That makes 230.67 the operative rule here. We confirm the requirement for your jurisdiction as part of the job. If your home was built before that change, the code doesn’t force a retrofit — but the lightning doesn’t care what year your panel was installed.
Will it lower my homeowners insurance?
Some Florida insurers view surge protection and modern electrical systems favorably, and surge damage is a common claim. Check with your carrier. But even setting insurance aside, the value is in avoiding the repair bills in the first place.
Can you add surge protection to my existing panel, or do I need a new one?
